This jar is specialy made to store and age bing cha's.
They are entirely made by hand, by pressing the clay into a large mould and then reworking each one for a good ten hours, in order for each one to have a 'unique' feel.
I wanted to make something 'timless' and 'symbolic'; the top motif is the 'flower of life ' a very ancient recurrent symbol in so many civilisations.
It is of deep Irish red clay, with grog (that is high fired clay and minerals ground down) thus it will not encourage mould growth.
They are fired individually at more than 1270°. and when the lid is held from underneath and tapped it makes that ''high pitched 'sound.
It was first specially devised with the kind help of Jeancarmet in Paris from the blog pue ehr & Yixin, in order for the air and the right level of humidity to circulate evenly around the cakes. see sketch

J'en ai rêvé un soir en me couchant y'a bien 6 mois, puis après tant d'essaies de glaises différentes j'ai finalement trouvé la bonne! Une 'Terracotta' Irlandaise très chamotté. J'ai pris mon temps pour la créer:
Une fois la terre 'imprimé' dans le moule, je dois attendre 2 semaines voir 3 si il pleu pour que je puisse commencer à la retravaillé. Un peu chaque jour car le couvercle n'étant pas de la même masse que le dessous ils sechent à des rythmes différents; il me faut donc les surveiller de près. Chaque jarre est donc retravaillé une dixaine d'heures en sortant du moule. Chaque pièce est donc 'unique', toutes les proportions sont calculé à l'oeil et elle n'est pas fabriqué au tour.
J'ai voulu faire quelque chose d'intemporel, de symbolique. Inspiré d'archéologie j'ai choisi un motif très ancien; un thème récurrant dans l'histoire de l'humanité, 'la fleur de vie'
Pour la cuisson, elle était toute seule dans mon four au Gaz qui est monté à plus de 1270° c et quand on l'ouvre elle sonne comme une cloche.
